The students in Color & Design created collaborative, seasonal murals in the weeks leading up to winter break. They focused on drawing from observation using materials such as pine cones, ribbons, string-lights, poinsettias, and ornaments for inspiration. The students worked together to make decisions regarding the division of work, composition, and media choices. After finishing the basic layout, the students added dimension and depth using a variety of shading techniques. Several of the finished murals were given as gifts to teachers and principals. Besides creating the murals, my favorite ways we celebrated the holiday season was our little in-class “party” and the students’ participation in “ugly Christmas sweater day.” One mural is still hanging up outside the main office: stop by and see it!
